All the New England references I could find on Noah Kahan’s album “The Great Divide”
End of August
And I follow New York plates to the county line
I ignore 'em when they wave on 89.
(89 the interstate that runs past Strafford, Kahan’s hometown. Strafford is exit 2, right after you cross into VT from NH)
They mined copper for years, oh, there was nothin' left to dig
(Probably the Elizabeth Mine, on the line between Thetford and Strafford VT)
Doors
I was born into a one-hundred-year storm
Foot of ice across Vermont
And in that dark, and in that frost, a heart was formed
(Probably a reference to the ice storm of 1998, when Kahan was one year old).
Downfall
Call me when the bugs don't die and the spring looks just like autumn
Oh, tell me when you miss the climb from a hole that has no bottom
(Certainly a reference to the moment in September when the cold nights start killing all of the mosquitos. The “hole that has no bottom” is probably one of the many swimming holes in the area).
Lighthouse
Feeding the flightless birds on the pier
Hoping you might return to the fog 'round here
(Probably the Kendal Riverfront Park in Hanover, N.H or maybe the Dartmouth crew docks: the river gets really foggy. Kahan went to Hanover High School.)
Paid Time Off
So I stared at the plastic collidin' with dirt
At the fast food sign out in Leb'
(West Lebanon, town south of Hanover with a big shopping center)
It's been a damn near-perfect day, just gettin' high at the outlet mall
(Could be the outlets in Manchester, VT or the shopping center in West Leb)
Staying Still
But the Charles meets the sun
And the Harvard track team runs
Past my truck, stuck on Storrow
(Storrow Drive runs along the Boston side of the Charles River; Kahan lived in Watertown, on the north side, but probably crossed over to Storrow to get on the Mass Pike to Logan. Many track teams, including Harvard’s, run along the river)
And I never ask for much
But I hope that Logan crumbles and gets hit by a tornado
(Logan is Boston’s main airport).
Great Divide
You inched yourself across the great divide
While we drove aimlessly along the Twin State line
(VT-NH line)
Haircut
For two hundred years, we laid bricks in the dirt, put solar in the copper mines
(Probably Elizabeth Mine again. The Nature Conservancy helped to fund a 45-acre field of solar panels there. )
Heading North
You'll get told to go to hell by some summertime flatlander
With a "coexistence" sticker on the bumper of their car
(“Flatlanders” are people from southern New England, especially Boston and the suburbs and rightly mocked for being arrogant and self-righteous).
All Them Horses
See the dried flood lines on the neighbors' porches
Do you remember cryin' for all them horses?
They did not look scared at all
They did not look scared, they did not look scared at all
(Likely a reference to the floods, especially of the White River, after 2011 Hurricane Irene)
I ain't planned it, the plane, the plane just landed out here
Rubbed my eyes on 89, double yellow, murdered deer
(In 2018, a plane landed on Route 89 about two exits up from Kahan’s hometown)
Orbiter
This ain't Watertown, I'm on alien ground
I'm a collеge kid with my windows down
(Kahan lived in Watertown with his girlfriend — now wife).
Dan
See the lightnin' light the world, land on Orange County ground
(The VT county of Kahan’s hometown)
